How to Identify Original Tulsi Mala

It is advisable to source Tulsi Malas from an authentic & reputable seller. Below we have mentioned a few tips to identify original Tulsi mala. These are based on characteristics of Tulsi Mala beads which have a distinct weight, texture, scent & finishing. Usually fake Tulsi Beads are made from Neem Wood, Sandalwood, Rosewood, Bodhi Wood or Teak Wood which are dyed and chemically processed.

Observation:
Every Tulsi Mala bead is different from the other, each bead may have the same size and shape however on the surface you will see natural imperfections, it may be chipped off or have dark brown color blemishes & discolorations. This is a unique characteristic of Tulsi Mala beads. Also, the Tulsi Mala beads are available in different shades of sandy brown from light to dark. The Tulsi mala will display these slight variations of sandy brown colors between different beads. If the beads look identical without any color variations, imperfections, blemishes or discolorations as if they were made in factory then that Tulsi Mala may be fake.

Weight:
When you analyze wood derived from trees, usually the wood in the center of the stem is less dense and lighter than the wood at the edges simply because the wood at the center needs to be more porous to allow water and other substances to travel to the entire plant. Tulsi Stem is thin and thus the beads derived from its stem usually weigh less than beads derived from other wood like Neem, Sandal, Rose Wood etc. This can be used to identify original Tulsi mala beads.

Scent:
Unlike Tulsi leaves, Tulsi Mala beads do not have a powerful scent. This scent is like Tulsi Leaves and is described as woody, fresh, earthy & sweet. To experience this scent one can slightly wet the Mala and keep inside an airtight container for a few hours. After opening the Jar, you will be able to smell the Natural Scent of this Mala which resembles the scent of Tulsi Leaves. This scent can also be produced if you heat or rub the Tulsi Mala beads together but be careful as this may damage the Tulsi Mala beads. However, this scent fades over time. This can also be used as an authentication test for Tulsi Malas.

Texture:
Original Tulsi beads are softer than most beads and can be damaged easily. They have a smoothened but have a woody rough outer texture. They are slightly oily as they possess natural oils from the Tulsi Plant itself. Thus running our finger along the Tulsi Mala beads keeping in mind these indicator can help you identify original Tulsi Mala.

Most of the techniques mentioned above require some amount of experience and exposure to original Tulsi Mala, amongst these, the observation test is the most reliable where you can identify Tulsi Mala beads from its color, imperfections, blemishes and discolorations.

How are Tulsi beads made from Tulsi Plant

There are many ways by which Tulsi Mala beads are made. Sometime for different shapes of the beads different techniques are used. The technique differ across different regions as well. Technological innovation is bringing newer methods to make these malas as well. Below we have mentioned one of the ways in which Tulsi Mala beads are derived from dried Tulsi Stem or Bark.

Harvesting: Tulsi Stems to Barks are harvested from matured Tulsi Trees. These barks are sorted as per the thickness from which different Tulsi Mala beads are prepared.

Drying: These Tulsi stems are dried under the Sun so the beads loose moisture so they can be carved into Tulsi beads of desired shapes

Selecting: Appropriate shapes of Stems are selected to create Tulsi Mala Beads

Carving: Specialized Lathe Machines are used to drill holes and give Tulsi beads the desired shapes, thin Tulsi stems are converted into Kanthi Mala beads and Big Size stems are converted into Tulsi Japa Mala Beads

Polishing: Final Polishing is done using Sandpaper to give Tulsi Mala beads a smoother finish The Beads are strung loosely in thread which are then traded across India Rudra Centre receives these Tulsi beads directly from trusted manufacturers After receiving these malas they undergo a strict quality check to ensure purity & quality Once an order is received, we select the best beads and string the beads in a Mala After the Mala is made it undergoes Vedic Consecration Process by our in-house team of Karmakandi Pandits before it is shipped to you.

Mention of Tulsi Beads Mala in Scriptures

In the Vedas, Tulasi ("matchless") is known as Vaishnavi ("belonging to Vishnu"), Vishnu Vallabha ("beloved of Vishnu"), Haripriya ("beloved of Vishnu"), Vishnu Tulasi. The Tulasi with green leaves is known as Shri-Tulasi or Lakshmi-Tulasi, as Shri is a synonym for Lakshmi, who is Vishnu's spouse. The Devi Bhagavata Purana regards Tulasi as a manifestation of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and the consort of Bhagawan Vishnu.

According to the scriptures, it is believed that a person wearing a Tulsi Mala does not suffer untimely death or any detrimental disease. It has also been mentioned in the puranas that if there is a Tulsi Mala on the body while eating food, then that person gets the virtue of performing yajna many times. The Padma Purana declares a person who is cremated with Tulasi twigs in his funeral pyre gains moksha and a place in Vishnu's abode Vaikuntha.

In the Srimad Bhagavatam, the significance of the Tulasi over other plants is described as:
“Although flowering plants like the mandāra, kunda, kurabaka, utpala, campaka, arṇa, punnāga, nāgakeśara, bakula, lily and pārijāta are full of transcendental fragrance, they are still conscious of the austerities performed by tulasī, for tulasī is given special preference by the Lord, who garlands Himself with tulasī leaves.”
— Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 4, Chapter 15, Verse 19

In the Skanda Purana the Tulsi plant is importantly mentioned:
"Let me offer my respectful obeisance unto the tulasī tree, which can immediately vanquish volumes of sinful activities. Simply by seeing or touching this tree one can become relieved from all distresses and diseases. Simply by offering obeisance’s to and pouring water on the tulasī tree, one can become freed from the fear of being sent to the court of Yamarāj [the King of death, who punishes the sinful]. If someone sows a tulasī tree somewhere, certainly he becomes devoted to Lord Krishna. And when the tulasī leaves are offered in devotion at the lotus feet of Krishna, there is the full development of love of Godhead."

Therefore, the Skanda Purana states that the wearer of Tulsi beads is among the most favored devotees of the Lord. No matter how much bad karma a person has accrued, if he wears Tulsi beads around his neck with devotion, he will manage to please the Lord. Such a person need not practice any other rituals for atonement and is freed of his past sins.

Similarly, also the Garuda Purana exalts the virtues of the Tulsi plant as remover of karma, as follows:

“Tulsi burns one's sins accumulated in former existences on planting it, growing it, watering it, meditating upon it, touching it and narrating its account.”

In the Vishnu Purana, Bhagawan Vishnu says that anyone who wears Tulsi beads around their neck will attain Him, even if the person is of bad character. Vaishnavas wear the mala around their neck after their first offering to Bhagawan Vishnu.

Significance of Tulsi Beads for
Bhagawan Vishnu & Lord Krishna's Worship

In the Padma Purana there is a declaration describing how a Vaishnava should decorate his body with tilak and beads: "Persons who put Tulsi beads on the neck, who mark twelve places of their bodies as Visnu temples with Visnu's symbolic representations “the four items held in the four hands of Bhagawan Visnu - conch, mace, disc and lotus, and who have Vishnu Tilak on their foreheads, are to be understood as the devotees of Bhagawan Visnu in this world. Their presence makes the world purified, and anywhere they remain, they make that place as good as Vaikuntha."

Tulasi is highly revered in the worship of Bhagawan Vishnu, including Lord Krishna and other Vaishnava deities. Garlands made from 10,000 Tulasi leaves, water mixed with Tulasi leaves, bundles of Tulsi leaves are frequently used in worship of Vishnu or Krishna. Vaishnavas have traditionally used Japa malas, which are Hindu prayer beads made from Tulasi stems or roots, commonly referred to as Tulsi malas. These malas bring good fortune to those who wear them, creating a spiritual bond with Vishnu or Krishna and receiving the divine protection of the deity. Vaishnavas are known for their close connection with Tulsi malas, often wearing it around their neck as a symbol of their devotion. Pilgrims frequently carry Tulsi plants when they travel to Dvaraka, a highly revered Hindu city believed to be the legendary capital of Krishna.

Tulsi Mala is highly regarded in ancient scriptures for its importance among the followers of Vaishnavism. It is believed that wearing Tulsi Mala while meditating on Bhagawan Vishnu helps purify the body. Not including Tulsi Mala in the worship of Bhagawan Vishnu is considered incomplete and impure. Furthermore, it is essential to include Tulsi in every offering made to Vishnu. Tulsi beads, whether used as offerings or in malas, symbolize purity and devotion. They serve to promote spiritual growth and favor with the deity. Tulsi is ideal for meditation and Vishnu mantra chanting due to its spiritual and physical cleansing qualities. In addition to representing devotion and divine love, the beads also symbolize the unwavering devotion of the Goddess Vrinda to Bhagawan Vishnu.

Radha Rani, originally known as Vrinda, was born as Lakshmi Mata and her name represents Tulsi. As soon as Radha Rani's feet contacted the ground, a beautiful forest of Tulsi plants miraculously grew from the previously desolate land. This location in India is now known as Vrindavan. Tulsi malas are associated with Radharani in the divine connection between Radha and Krishna, as Shrimati Radharani is also known as Shree Vrinda Devi, Lord Krishna's eternal partner. Tulsi leaves are presented to Lord Krishna to show devotion and love. Placing Tulasi beads or leaves at the Lord's feet is a highly meritorious act that symbolizes profound devotion and a longing for purity, greatly pleasing the Lord.

According to the Vedic scriptures, it is stated that Lord Krishna will only accept food that is adorned with a Tulasi leaf. As per the Gautamiya Tantra, Lord Krishna is willing to be sold to a devotee who presents Him with just a Tulasi leaf and a palmful of water. Worshipping Tulasi with faith brings countless benefits and blessings from Lord Krishna.

Offering Tulsi to Bhagwan Vishnu is a noteworthy act of devotion and reverence. It represents the devotee's deep affection, loyalty, and dedication to the deity. Vishnu considers Tulsi to be sacred and highly desirable, enhancing the spiritual significance of worship and the purity of offerings.

According to legend, Vrinda, a devotee of Vishnu, married Jalandhara, the demon king. Vrinda's unalterable purity and dedication made Jalandhara invincible. Vishnu deceived Vrinda by assuming the form of Jalandhara, causing her to break her vow and ultimately leading to Jalandhara's defeat, thus maintaining cosmic order. Upon discovering the deception, Vrinda cast a curse upon Vishnu, transforming him into a black stone also known as Shaligrams. This curse gave rise to the Shaligram, a revered stone believed to embody Vishnu. Bhagawan Vishnu, deeply moved by Vrinda's devotion, transformed her into the Tulsi plant as a lasting tribute to her. Since then, the Tulsi plant is considered the embodiment of Vrinda and holds great significance in the worship of Vishnu.

Worshiping Lord Krishna by humbly and sincerely seeking His blessings, grace, and protection with Tulsi beads is the most preferred manner by the Lord himself. Tulsi symbolizes purity and simplicity, reflecting the devotee's desire to embody these qualities to connect with God. The offering of Tulsi highlights the intimate bond between the devotee and the god, making it an essential part of Krishna worship rituals.

What is a good day for wearing Tulsi Mala?

An Energized Tulsi Mala can be worn on any day. However, Thursdays are auspicious for wearing Tulsi malas as they are believed to bring luck during the worship of Bhagawan Vishnu and his avatars, like Lord Krishna. Also, Thursdays are often linked to Brihaspati Dev (Jupiter), the deity associated with spirituality and knowledge. Certain followers may opt to wear it on Ekadashi, the 11th day of the lunar fortnight, which holds great importance in Vaishnava tradition and Vishnu worship.

Typically, it is recommended to wear Tulsi malas on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays. However, while certain days may be considered more appropriate following the tradition, the scriptures do not stipulate a specific time for wearing sacred Tulsi malas, hence the Tulsi Mala can be worn on any day of the year.

The shape of the beads may be Round or Cylindrical or Lingam Shaped but the key distinguishing factor will be the size of the beads. Tulsi Mala is typically used for Mantra chanting and meditation, which helps to concentrate the mind and count repetitions (Japa) so supporting spiritual activities. On the contrary, a Tulsi Kanthi is made of smaller beads, may have multiple layers of Tulsi beads strands which are worn around the neck as a symbol of devotion and protection.

People who follow Gaudiya Vaishnavism often wear Kanthi malas made of Tulsi beads. Vaishnavas typically receive their Kanthi from their guru during diksha, or spiritual initiation. It denotes Lord Krishna, who is highly revered as Svayam Bhagawan in Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Krishna had a profound affection for Tulsi. Accordingly, Krishna's followers worship the plant as "Tulasi devi." The Tulsi plant is highly revered as it offers the blessings of Lord Krishna to his devotees. Gaudiya Vaishnavas therefore make a point of never taking off their Tulsi Kanthis, under any circumstances.

While both are made from the sacred Tulsi plant and hold spiritual significance, the Tulsi Mala is more commonly used as a rosary to practice Japa Mantra Chanting, whereas the Tulsi Kanthi serves as a personal adornment and constant reminder of one's faith and dedication to Lord Krishna and Bhagawan Vishnu.
